Writer/Critic, Performer/Artist

Andrea Liu is a New York/Berlin-based visual art & performance critic/curator (and artist). Her work spans performance, text-based visual art, dance, digital collage, and “shitty images” (from Hito Steyerl’s, “In Defense of the Poor Image”). Much of her text-based visual art comes out of exploiting the gap between signified and signifier: to pit the abstract idea to which a word refers against the materiality of the word itself (visuality of letters, sound of word, etc.). Since 2008 she was awarded/attended 15 artist residencies in the U.S., Germany, Denmark, Italy, Spain, & Czech Republic, including Atlantic Center for the Arts (Master Artist: Cornelius Eady), The Art & Law Program, MFAH Houston, Ox-Bow, Millay Colony, Jacob’s Pillow Research Fellowship, ZK/U-Berlin, Centrale Fies Liveworks Performance Act Award Vol. 4, and was a Core Participant in Anton Vidokle’s New Museum’s Nightschool. She has performed at S.a.L.E. Docks (Venice), Artists Space (Movement Research Dance Improvisation Festival), NGBK, Dixon Place, St. Marks Church, Chez Bushwick, and had a solo exhibition at the HTMlles Feminist Festival of Digital Art and Media Culture.

She has given talks/panels at Geffen Museum (L.A. Printed Matter Contemporary Artist Books Conference), NYU Performance Studies Conference (Affect Factory), Black Mountain College Museum & Arts Center, Printed Matter (NYC), Triangle Arts Association, Jan Van Eyck Academie Alumni Conference, London Conference in Critical Thought, Society for Artistic Research Conference & College Art Association (amongst others). She received her dance training from the Limon Institute (studying harnessing of extreme weight shifts, momentum & release work), Trisha Brown Summer Dance Intensive and MELT; she danced for NYC choreographers Jennifer Monson, koosil-ja hwang, and Elise Knudson. She has written art/performance criticism for Afterimage, ArtMargins, Art US, e-flux (AUP), Social Text, New Museum Social Practice Glossary, Movement Research Journal, Pastelegram, Postmodern Culture, and has book chapter contributions to Infinite Instances (Mark Batty Publishers, 2011), Sarai Reader 09: Projections (Raqs Media Collective, 2013), IN Works 931-14209 (Edition Fink, 2014), Deste 15th Anniversary Exhibition 1999-2015 (Deste Foundation, 2017), Legal Interventions, 2007-2014 [by Vincent W.J. van Gerven Oei] (Utigeveri Press, forthcoming 2018), and the upcoming catalogue for Brud (Aditya Mandayam’s) solo exhibition at Kunstverein Munich (July, 2018).

She received her undergraduate education from Yale University and thereafter studied literary criticism at Centre Parisien D’Etudes Critiques (Paris, France).  While in residence at Chashama she will concurrently do a 3 month online residency at x-temporary.org (curated by Marenka Krasomil of NBK Berlin). After Chashama she will be artist-in-residence at Petrohradská Kolektiv in Prague for the summer.
