The ChaNorth Artist Residency, situated in the Hudson Valley, was established in 2006 by Chashama in Pine Plains. Running in parallel with our core residency program, ChaNorth is pleased to introduce the Residency Retreat Program. This new initiative offers four dedicated houses designed to support artists seeking a focused live/work environment within a natural setting. Each house is unique, and applicants may apply for the entire house or for individual bedrooms, making it ideal for artists, couples, art groups, and collectives. This is a fully self-directed retreat, giving residents the freedom to structure their time independently and focus deeply on their creative work.
With stays ranging from one to three months, the program offers the time, space, and quiet needed to support sustained artistic practice while maintaining a comfortable, home-like environment. Located in a tranquil landscape surrounded by lakes and woods near Pine Plains, the retreat provides access to scenic walking paths and a peaceful, restorative environment. At the same time, it is just a short drive from Hudson Valley towns such as Rhinebeck and Red Hook, allowing residents to enjoy both seclusion and connection to nearby cultural communities.
While the retreat is self-directed, residents have the option to engage with the wider ChaNorth community through optional activities such as Open Studios, field trips, and social gatherings including BBQs and shared dinners. Participation is entirely voluntary, allowing each resident to choose their preferred balance between solitude and community.
This program is especially suited for those looking to step away from the pace of city life, reconnect with nature, and immerse themselves in a focused, independent creative process within a supportive and inspiring environment.
The houses are fully equipped with essential amenities, including furnished living spaces, bed linens and towels, internet access, washer and dryer, and air conditioning in select areas where available. Although there is no traditional “white cube” studio space, the house offers adaptable spaces suitable for writers, textile artists, painters, and even large-scale sculptural work. Each house offer a flexible live/work environment and multiple areas adaptable for different artistic practices. Suitable for individuals or co-applicants, it can also be shared by a group of artists.
Residents are responsible for their own food, daily needs, and for bringing their own materials, tools, and equipment. Due to the rural setting, having a car is essential.
